Malka Macrame’s journey began in 2015 when I, Ester, first set foot in India and fell in love with its vast and intricate world of craftsmanship. Growing up, creativity was always a part of my life—I spent my childhood immersed in embroidery, painting, and various crafts. But macrame? That was something I had never encountered.
In the early 2000s, macrame had faded from fashion, so it wasn’t until my first week in India that I stumbled upon micro macrame.
I was immediately curious. I quickly found a talented teacher who taught me the basics.
When my travels ended, my curiosity only grew. I began exploring the craft in depth and soon opened an Etsy store, selling handmade jewelry as a hobby.
By 2016, I found myself back in India—this time on a mission to source high-quality materials for a project I had received from a studio in Denmark. What started as a personal passion quickly transformed into Malka Macrame, a brand that gained rapid recognition on Etsy. For several years, we ranked among the top 500 sellers out of more than 4 million worldwide.
I spent those years traveling across India, forming friendships with artisans, handpicking the best materials, and shipping them across the globe—to over 50 countries. I never could have imagined where this journey would take me.
A Collective Success
But this success was never mine alone. Malka Macrame was built on the dedication of talented artisans, skilled factory workers, and an amazing, committed team in magical India. Every product we offered carried the authenticity and quality of Indian craftsmanship—from the precision of stone cutters shaping our cabochons to the skilled hands of artisans crafting jewelry components. Their expertise brought our collections to life, setting us apart in the industry.
Like any journey, ours was not without challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic, India was closed for a few months—no parcels could leave the country. I came back to Israel and adapted—broadening our selection to include macrame materials from Turkey and China in a local store, ensuring we could continue meeting our customers’ evolving needs. However, by the end of 2022, changes in the online marketplace and personal considerations led us to make the difficult decision to close our global operations.
A New Chapter for Malka Macrame
Yet, even after two years, the demand never stopped. I continued receiving requests from past customers and new artisans looking for quality materials—especially the craft supplies we sourced from India. Despite the explosion of online retail, I realized that there was still a strong need for a reliable, direct source of high-quality macrame and jewelry-making supplies.
Why We’re Back—But Different
Over the years, we’ve built a community of over 50,000 followers across YouTube, Pinterest, and Instagram, many of whom are professional artisans selling their work. Understanding their needs, I decided to bring back Malka Macrame—this time, in a different way.
Instead of offering small, retail-sized quantities like on Etsy, our new model is semi-wholesale—not massive bulk orders, but rather larger, cost-effective bundles designed for artisans and small businesses. Here’s what’s different:
✔ Larger quantities at better prices – Instead of buying small amounts at high Etsy prices, you get nearly 1kg of brass charms and brass beads for the same cost as much smaller quantities on other platforms.
✔ A curated selection – Focused on the materials people have been asking for, including two main types of macrame cords that have remained in high demand.
✔ Reliable supply for makers – If you create and sell your work, you need a consistent, high-quality source of materials. That’s what we aim to provide.
While the format has changed, my commitment to quality, fair pricing, and ethical sourcing remains the same. This is a new chapter, built with a deep understanding of what makers need.
đź’« Join me in this new journey! Whether you’re an experienced artisan or just starting out, Malka Macrame is here to support your creativity with premium materials at the right scale.
